Moderation & AutoMod

Take control of your Discord server with M0XY's customizable moderation system. Learn how to manage blocked words, configure role and channel exemptions, customize warning messages, enable moderation logging, and set up automatic punishment escalation.

Development Notice

M0XY is currently in development and is not yet available for public installation. This guide will be updated as features become available.

1. Overview

M0XY AutoMod is a customizable moderation system designed to help Discord server administrators automatically detect and manage inappropriate messages.

Each Discord server can configure its own moderation settings, allowing administrators to control how M0XY responds to rule violations.

Available AutoMod Features

  • Blocked Word Filtering: Automatically detect and delete messages containing configured blocked words.
  • Exact & Partial Matching: Choose how blocked words are detected.
  • Role Exemptions: Exclude selected roles from AutoMod filtering.
  • Channel Exemptions: Exclude selected channels from AutoMod filtering.
  • Custom Warnings: Configure warning messages and their duration.
  • Moderation Logging: Record deleted messages, triggered words, and moderation actions.
  • Punishment Escalation: Configure violation thresholds and consequences. Additional escalation functionality is in development.
Per-Server Configuration

AutoMod settings are managed independently for each Discord server using M0XY.

2. Required Permissions

M0XY requires certain Discord permissions to detect rule violations, delete messages, send warnings, and perform moderation actions.

Permission Purpose
View Channels Access channels monitored by AutoMod.
Manage Messages Delete messages containing blocked words.
Send Messages Send warnings and moderation notifications.
Embed Links Display formatted moderation logs.
Read Message History Access previous messages when needed.
Moderate Members Apply member timeouts when supported and configured.
Message Content Intent

M0XY also requires Discord's Message Content privileged intent to inspect ordinary message text for blocked words. This is a developer application setting, not a server permission.

M0XY must have the required permissions in the channels where AutoMod is enabled. For member timeouts, M0XY's highest role must also be above the member's highest role.

3. AutoMod Setup

M0XY's AutoMod system can be enabled or disabled independently for each Discord server. Administrators can manage AutoMod using Discord slash commands.

Enable AutoMod

To activate automated moderation, use:

/automod enable Enables AutoMod filtering for your server.

Once enabled, M0XY will begin checking new messages against your configured blocked-word list, subject to any role or channel exemptions.

Disable AutoMod

/automod disable Disables automated blocked-word filtering.

Disabling AutoMod does not automatically remove your saved blocked words or exemptions. Your configuration remains available for future use.

Check AutoMod Status

/automod status Displays the current AutoMod status.
Before You Begin

Make sure M0XY has the necessary Discord permissions and that you have configured at least one blocked word to test filtering.

4. Blocked Words

M0XY allows administrators to create a custom list of blocked words for their Discord server. When AutoMod is enabled, messages containing matching blocked words are automatically deleted.

Adding a Blocked Word

/badword add Add a word to the blocked-word list and select its matching behavior.

When adding a word, choose between exact and partial matching.

Exact vs. Partial Matching

Match Type Behavior Example
Exact Matches the configured word as a separate word. Blocking "cat" matches "cat", but not "category".
Partial Matches the configured text even when it appears inside another word. Blocking "cat" can also match "category".

Removing a Blocked Word

/badword remove Remove an existing word from your server's blocked-word list.

Viewing Blocked Words

/badword list Display the blocked words currently configured for your server.
Filtering Tip

Use exact matching when you want to avoid accidentally blocking harmless words. Partial matching is more aggressive and may match text inside unrelated words.

5. Role & Channel Exemptions

M0XY allows administrators to exclude specific Discord roles and channels from AutoMod filtering. This provides flexibility for staff members, moderation channels, and other designated areas.

Role Exemptions

Members with an exempt role are excluded from blocked-word filtering.

/automod exempt-role-add Add a Discord role to the exemption list.
/automod exempt-role-remove Remove a role from the exemption list.
/automod exempt-role-list View all exempt roles.

Channel Exemptions

Messages sent in exempt channels will not be filtered by M0XY's blocked-word system.

/automod exempt-channel-add Add a Discord channel to the exemption list.
/automod exempt-channel-remove Remove a channel from the exemption list.
/automod exempt-channel-list View all exempt channels.
Important

Exemptions only affect M0XY's AutoMod filtering. They do not override Discord server permissions or moderation performed by other bots.

6. Warning Messages

M0XY can notify members when their messages are removed for violating AutoMod rules. Administrators can enable or disable warnings, customize the message, and configure how long the warning remains visible.

Enable or Disable Warnings

/automod warning-enable Enable AutoMod warning messages.
/automod warning-disable Disable AutoMod warning messages.

Customize the Warning Message

/automod warning-message Set the message displayed when a member triggers a blocked-word rule.

Example warning message:

Message Removed

Your message was removed because it violated this server's chat rules. Please review the rules before sending another message.

Configure Warning Duration

/automod warning-duration Configure how long warning messages remain visible before M0XY removes them.

Check Warning Settings

/automod warning-status Display the current warning configuration.
Important

Warning messages are separate from punishment escalation. Enabling warnings does not automatically enable member timeouts or other punishments.

7. Moderation Logging

M0XY can record AutoMod violations in a designated Discord logging channel. Moderation logs help server administrators review deleted messages and identify repeated rule violations.

Enable Moderation Logging

Select a Discord text channel where M0XY should send moderation logs.

/automod log-enable Enable moderation logging and configure the channel where logs are sent.

Disable Moderation Logging

/automod log-disable Disable AutoMod logging for your server.

Check Logging Status

/automod log-status Display the current moderation logging configuration.

Information Included in Logs

When M0XY deletes a message because of a blocked-word violation, the moderation log can include:

  • The Discord member responsible
  • The channel where the violation occurred
  • The moderation action performed
  • The blocked word that triggered AutoMod
  • The matching type (exact or partial)
  • The deleted message content
Recommended Setup

Use a private staff-only channel for moderation logs. Deleted messages may contain inappropriate or sensitive content, so access should be limited to trusted moderators and administrators.

8. Punishment Escalation

M0XY's punishment escalation system is being developed to help server administrators manage repeated AutoMod violations.

The goal is to allow each Discord server to configure its own violation thresholds and corresponding moderation consequences.

View Escalation Status

/escalation status View the current punishment escalation configuration for your server.

View Escalation Rules

/escalation list Display configured escalation thresholds.

Add an Escalation Rule

/escalation add Configure a violation threshold and associated timeout duration.

The current rule configuration accepts the following values:

Setting Accepted Values Description
Violations 1–1000 Number of violations associated with the escalation rule.
Minutes 1–40320 Configured timeout duration in minutes.
Feature In Development

Escalation rule configuration is being implemented and tested. Automatic timeout enforcement and additional punishment options are not yet confirmed as complete. Configuring a rule should not be treated as a guarantee that a punishment will automatically be applied.

10. Troubleshooting

If M0XY AutoMod is not behaving as expected, review the common issues and solutions below.

AutoMod Is Not Deleting Messages

If messages containing blocked words are not being removed, check the following:

  • Confirm AutoMod is enabled using /automod status.
  • Check that the word exists using /badword list.
  • Verify M0XY has the Manage Messages permission in the affected channel.
  • Check whether the member has an exempt role.
  • Check whether the channel is exempt from AutoMod filtering.
  • Verify the configured exact or partial matching behavior.

Warning Messages Are Not Appearing

Use /automod warning-status to verify warnings are enabled. Confirm M0XY can send messages in the affected channel and check whether the warning duration is very short.

Moderation Logs Are Missing

Use /automod log-status to check whether logging is enabled and a valid channel is configured.

Verify M0XY has permission to view the logging channel, send messages, and embed links.

Slash Commands Are Not Showing

Ensure M0XY is installed in the server with the appropriate application command authorization and that your account has permission to use the commands.

If commands were recently added or updated, they may need to be registered or synchronized before appearing in Discord.

Punishment Escalation Is Not Applying Timeouts

Automatic punishment escalation is still under development. Configured thresholds do not currently guarantee that a timeout will be applied.

Once enforcement is implemented, M0XY will also require the Moderate Members permission and an appropriate role hierarchy to apply member timeouts.

Still Need Help?

M0XY is currently in development. Additional troubleshooting resources and support options will become available as the project progresses.
