Reaction Roles
Help your community choose their own notification and interest roles. Explore the planned M0XY role-selection experience, required Discord permissions, setup considerations, and safe role management.
M0XY is currently in development and is not yet available for public installation. Reaction Roles are planned, and specific M0XY commands, interfaces, and options have not been confirmed as working features.
1. Overview
Reaction roles let members select Discord roles by interacting with a message. They can be useful for choosing notification preferences, interests, game communities, or event alerts.
Planned M0XY Capabilities
- Customizable role-selection messages and panels.
- Multiple role options within a panel, where supported.
- Role assignment and removal based on a member’s selection.
- Configurable presentation that fits your server’s branding.
M0XY's reaction-role feature is planned. This guide explains the intended behavior and general Discord requirements; no M0XY reaction-role commands are confirmed as implemented.
2. Required Permissions
M0XY will need appropriate permissions in the destination channel and for the roles it manages.
| Permission | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| View Channel | Access the channel containing the role panel. |
| Send Messages | Post the role-selection message. |
| Embed Links | Display a formatted panel if embeds are used. |
| Manage Roles | Assign or remove eligible roles. |
| Add Reactions | Required only if the implementation uses emoji reactions rather than buttons or menus. |
| Read Message History | May be needed for a reaction-based implementation. |
The exact permissions will depend on the final interaction type and implementation.
3. How Reaction Roles Work
A role panel connects a member’s selection to a Discord role. Depending on the implementation, the member might click an emoji reaction, button, or selection menu.
- A server administrator configures the panel and its available roles.
- M0XY posts the panel in a chosen channel.
- A member selects a role option.
- M0XY checks its permissions and the role hierarchy.
- When permitted, M0XY adds or removes the corresponding role.
Whether M0XY will use emoji reactions, buttons, select menus, or a combination has not yet been confirmed. The name “Reaction Roles” is used here as the documentation category.
4. Planned Setup Process
The final setup interface is still being designed. The following workflow is a proposed outline, not a tested command tutorial.
- Create the Discord roles members should be able to select.
- Move M0XY's bot role above the selectable roles in Server Settings → Roles.
- Choose a channel for the role-selection panel.
- Configure the panel title, description, and role options.
- Publish the panel once the builder is available.
- Test selection and removal using a non-administrator account.
There are no confirmed M0XY slash-command names for reaction roles yet. This section will be updated when the feature is implemented and tested.
5. Role Panels & Messages
A clear panel helps members understand which roles are available and what each one does. Consider using a short title, one-sentence instructions, and distinct option labels.
Suggested Panel Content
Choose Your NotificationsSelect the alerts you want to receive. You can update your preferences later if the panel supports toggling or removal.Where supported, panels may include an embed color, icon, or image. Exact customization controls are not yet confirmed for M0XY.
6. Role Options
Role options should have understandable names and avoid granting staff or administrative access.
| Example Role | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Event Alerts | Receive announcements about community events. |
| Giveaway Alerts | Opt in to giveaway notifications. |
| Live Notifications | Get notified when creators go live. |
| Game Night | Show interest in community gaming sessions. |
Whether panels will support single-choice selection, multiple choices, or mutually exclusive roles is still to be determined.
7. Role Hierarchy & Safety
Discord role hierarchy determines which roles a bot can manage. M0XY's highest role must be positioned above every role it is expected to assign or remove.
- Grant Manage Roles only when needed.
- Never include administrator, moderator, or other privileged roles in a public self-assignment panel.
- Keep M0XY's role above selectable roles, but do not grant unnecessary administrator permissions.
- Review role permissions before making a role selectable by everyone.
A bot cannot assign roles above its own highest role. Channel permissions do not override Discord's role hierarchy.
8. Testing Reaction Roles
Once M0XY's feature is available, test with a regular member account rather than relying only on an administrator account.
- Verify the panel is visible in the intended channel.
- Select one option and confirm the matching role is assigned.
- Check whether selecting again removes the role, if that behavior is supported.
- Test more than one role option where applicable.
- Confirm members cannot self-assign restricted roles.
Keep a dedicated testing channel until the panel behaves as expected.
9. Example Role Panels
These examples are sample copy for future role panels, not existing M0XY commands.

A Role Is Not Being Assigned
Check that M0XY has Manage Roles and that its highest role is above the role being assigned. Verify the role is not managed by another integration.
The Panel Is Missing
Confirm the destination channel exists and that M0XY can view it and send messages.
A Member Cannot Interact With the Panel
Check the member's channel access and any relevant permissions for reactions or interactive components.
I Cannot Find Reaction-Role Commands
The M0XY reaction-role feature has not yet been confirmed as implemented. Command names and setup instructions will be added after development and testing.
More detailed troubleshooting steps will be published when the M0XY reaction-role workflow is available.
